How does pregnancy testing work?
Pregnancy testing works by measuring the amount of the human pregnancy hormone (hCG) in your urine. This hormone production begins right after the fertilized egg attaches to the wall of the uterus and begins to rise rapidly, peaking between 7 and 12 weeks after your last period. Once the hormone reaches a certain level, it can be detected by a pregnancy test.
When should I come in for pregnancy testing?
Even though our testing can identify pregnancy as early as 7 to 9 days after conception, we recommend that you wait at least one week after your missed period before coming in for testing. This will allow time for the hCG hormone level in your urine to rise—preventing a false-negative test result.
What happens if I test positive?
After pregnancy testing, one of our staff members will go over the results with you. If you do test positive, your next step is a free ultrasound. An ultrasound is very important because it determines if your pregnancy is viable and how far along you are. This valuable information will help you navigate the options available to you. Legacy Pregnancy Center offers ultrasounds at no cost to you, no insurance necessary.
